Google Scholar

FREE

Google Scholar is a subset of the full Google search engine, currently with no advertisements. The content includes peer-reviewed abstracts, journal articles, technical reports, dissertations, book chapters, theses, and more from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities. Search results include a useful "Cited by" link.

Index to Chiropractic Literature
FREE

The database is produced as a public service by the Chiropractic Library Consortium. It includes citations for peer-reviewed and selected trade journals in chiropractic, from 1985 to the present. Search by author, subject, or title keyword.

For recently published journals, ICL also includes abstracts and links to online articles, which are available as open-access or by subscription.   Not all chiropractic journals indexed in ICL are refereed so please consult the Peer Reviewed Chiropractic Journals List.

NCBI Bookshelf

FREE

The National Center for Biotechnology Information's growing collection of biomedical books can be searched by keyword.  Books are also linked to terms in PubMed abstracts.  When viewing an abstract, select the "Books" link to see phrases that are hyperlinked to sections in the full text books.

NLM Gateway
FREE

The NLM Gateway allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches MEDLINE/PubMed, TOXLINE Special, NLM Catalog, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, DIRLINE, Genetics Home Reference, Meeting Abstracts, HSRProj, OMIM, and HSDB.

Tip:  From within NLM Gateway, authorized users of the Loansome Doc service can automatically route requests for photocopying the full text of articles they have selected.  Fees for document delivery apply.

PubMed @ LCCW | PubMed tutorial | MeSH tutorials
FREE

PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's index to 11 million citations and abstracts of journal articles in the biomedical literature. By going to the customized link given above, instead of www.pubmed.gov, searchers will be able to see icons indicating which articles are found in both the print and online journal collection at Life West library. The icons are viewable only in "abstract" display mode.

Tip: It is possible to restrict search results to articles found in Life West library's journal collection as well as any free full text available on PubMed Central. Using "copy and paste", add the following modifier to the search statement:

AND (loprovlifewlib [sb] OR free full text [sb])

Example:

Multiple Sclerosis [MeSH]   AND (loprovlifewlib [sb] OR free full text [sb])

Note: Most researchers do not restrict search results to the locally held journals because many relevant articles would be omitted. The librarians can obtain such articles via interlibrary loan.

Tip:  In order to focus search results on articles about chiropractic, build your search by combining all appropriate MeSH terms for chiropractic AND the MeSH term for the topic in question.  See examples #1, #2, #3 or #4 below.

Example #1: (to retrieve articles published in 2001+)

"Manipulation, Chiropractic"[MeSH] OR "Chiropractic"[MeSH] AND "Low Back Pain/therapy" [MeSH]

This example combines the two major currently authorized subject headings for chiropractic, using OR. The authorized subject heading for the topic is appended, using AND.

Example #2: (to retrieve articles published in any year)

"Manipulation, Chiropractic"[MeSH] OR "Chiropractic"[MeSH] OR "Manipulation, Spinal"[MeSH] OR ("Manipulation, Spinal" [MeSH] AND chiropractic [tw]) AND "Low Back Pain/therapy" [MeSH]

This example adds the phrase enclosed in parentheses ("Manipulation Spinal [MeSH]" AND chiropractic [tw]) to the terms used in the previous example.

Why is this needed? "Manipulation, Spinal" was the search term assigned to articles about any kind of manipulation, including chiropractic, in the years 1999-2000. This search phrase, amended to include chiropractic as a textword, will retrieve articles about Spinal Manipulation that at least mention Chiropractic in the title, abstract, or subject headings, regardless of the year of publication.

Example #3: (for a broad, unfocused search)

"Low Back Pain/therapy" [MeSH] AND chiropractic [tw]

This example looks for any articles about Asthma that mention chiropractic anywhere in the title, abstract, or subject headings.

Example #4: (for a very broad search that might or might not apply to chiropractic)

"Low Back Pain/therapy" [MeSH] AND "Musculoskeletal Manipulations" [MeSH]

This example will retrieve articles mostly about non-chiropractic manipulation.  This is useful for comprehensive searches, and in cases where the specifically chiropractic literature is undeveloped.

Tip: For a review of how to use the MeSH database to construct a search using authorized subject headings, go to Chiropractic Articles in PubMed.

Tip:  From within PubMed, authorized users of the Loansome Doc service can automatically route requests for photocopying the full text of articles they have selected.  Fees for document delivery apply.

About Spine full-text via Ovid
Campus

The library accesses online full-text of the journal Spine via the Ovid company.  From Ovid's list of journal titles beginning with "S" click on Issue List for Spine.  The Issue List is organized in reverse chronology, from the most current to the earliest available issue.  Locate the desired issue and click on Table of Contents.  Each issue has links to all of the articles appearing in the print publication, plus all of the exclusively electronic articles.

In the Table of Contents, identify the desired article, and select "Ovid Full Text".  In the purple Output menu, select Full Text (PDF).

Adobe Acrobat will open.  Print the article.  Do not close the Adobe window.  Use the Back button.  Select another article to print.  When finished, please LOG OFF !!    The Ovid server will take a minute to log out this session.  If the current user closes the page without logging off, then no one anywhere on campus can use e-Spine until the full 15-minute session has elapsed.

If all user licenses are currently in use, the instruction to "Please try again later" will appear.

Tip:  When accessing Spine from PubMed@LCCW, display the citation in abstract view in order to reveal a Life West "electronic format " icon.  Click this icon to open a new OVID session that directly displays links for the desired article.   If all user licenses are currently in use, the following message will appear: "You do not have access to Ovid Full Text.  Login or Buy Now."  This is misleading.  It really means "Please try again later."

About BioMed Central

FREE online journal content from participating publishers

Many journals are entirely "Open Access" so that full-text is available without charge.  Other journals display only the abstracts for free.

Only some of the journals are indexed in PubMed, where the citations of full-text articles will display the "free" icon.  For those that are not indexed n PubMed, use Quick Search in BioMed Central.  In order to restrict a search to one journal, first go to the page dedicated to that publication.

For searching in a particular specialty, the list of journals by subject readily identifies relevant journals.  Note the Musculoskeletal Disorders category.
