Document Delivery

Photocopier:

  • For the duplication of research materials in the library's collections, faculty can use the library's photocopier at no charge.
  • Library must limit requests for photocopying to 10 articles per week. Many teachers copy journal articles and other materials themselves.
  • Respect for copyright is the teacher's responsibility. Library director can provide further information upon request.

Interlibrary loan (ILL) : Receive copies of journal articles or borrow books from other libraries.

Varying levels of service are described below for part-time and full-time regular faculty; teaching faculty employed exclusively through the Continuing Education and Postgraduate Department; and Clinical Researchers affiliated with Life West's research department.

When requests exceed the library's allowance, faculty are advised to contact their department chair for additional funds or to pay for documents as described in Fees for Service.

Allowance per fiscal year: July 1 through June 30
Full-time faculty $200
Part-time faculty $100
Continuing Education / Postgraduate Faculty $100
Clinical Researchers $100

While the library maintains as many free or low cost exchange agreements with other libraries as possible, our cost for a photocopy from a university is $11 per article. Some journal titles are only held by university libraries. Allow about one week to receive a copy of a journal article.

Allow about one month for receipt of returnable material such as books or audiovisuals borrowed from another library. A delinquent returnable ILL will result in an overdue notice. If still not returned, a billing notice charging the replacement value of the item and a $10 processing fee will follow in 10 days after the due date.

Library Instruction

Presentations to Faculty:

  • Available to individuals, groups, special occasions
  • Quick Class (15 minutes overview) by drop-in or appointment at the Reference Desk

Presentations to the Class:

  • Librarians will present a classroom lecture, online demonstration, and /or "hands on" session in the computer laboratory. The presentation will focus students' attention on the resources needed to complete assignments, and address the teacher's goals for the orientation.
  • Librarians recognize that students arrive with varying skills, and will develop optional or extra-credit workshops by advance arrangement.
  • Librarians rely on mutual cooperation with faculty to incrementally build "information literacy" throughout the curriculum. Short assignments often build skills that are used in a doctor's practice. CCE requirements address these skills.

Support for Assignments:

  • Kindly inform librarians about your requirements for short assignments that require library research.
  • Librarians can develop a topical Web page of recommended research links for a class.  This can be a valuable tool for students as they begin their research.

Reserve Materials

Books

  • Life West bookstore staff inform the librarians each quarter of current required and recommended textbooks.
  • Except for class note packets, the library puts a maximum of four copies of required texts in the Reserve Collection. Generally, one copy is restricted to onsite use in the library and subsequent copies are available for overnight use. Students are able to reserve specific copies one week in advance.

Audiovisuals

  • Currently only bone models are in the Reserve Collection. Students are able to reserve these models one week in advance.
  • Please notify librarians of required audiovisuals. Placing an audiovisual on reserve is very beneficial to the student. When faculty identify top-notch materials, the librarians are alerted to purchase enough copies.
  • Required audiovisuals can be restricted to onsite use, ensuring their availability to the instructor for classroom presentation.

Selected Readings

  • At an instructor's request, librarians will consider copyright compliance and generally will be able to place journal articles and other selected readings on reserve for students' convenience.
