Frequently asked questions

Q:  What does this service cover?  My research topics are not included.

A:   The Journal Article Discovery service highlights selected journal articles new to Life West Library's collection.   The service complements other, more comprehensive tools described at Keeping Current with Research and our Interlibrary Loan program.  Please contact a librarian for advice on the optimal combination of services for your needs.

Q:  How will I know when a new issue is published?

A:   Life West faculty and staff receive notification by e-mail.   Alumni, students and others can receive notice by becoming a Life West Facebook fan, or by letting us know at that e-mail notification is preferred.  E-mail us at library@lifewest.edu and be sure to input a subject line.  Alternatively, the RSS feed link below each category leads to instructions for subscribing so that an alert will be sent to your feed reader.  See our librarians for background on RSS, as well as other uses of the free bibliographic citation manager, Mendeley.

Q:  How can I get the full text?

A:  For full text in print:

  • Students must come to the library to make photocopies or print out PDFs.
  • Life West faculty and staff can request complimentary document delivery in a choice of formats: photocopy,  or PDF e-mail attachment. Occasionally, our license for an exclusively online journal does not permit electronic delivery.
  • Alumni and other researchers can use materials on site, or refer to Fees for Service for document delivery.

A:  For full text online:

  • Most but not all journals are published online. A few online journals are open-access (free), and many are paid subscriptions..
  • Life West students and faculty have direct access to online articles from paid subscriptions, and can click the link using any computer on campus.  For off-campus access, see Tutorials: Journals Articles.
  • Alumni and other researchers can use computers in the reference area on campus, or refer to Fees for Service for document delivery.

Q:  What is the difference between the PDF and the "feed view"?

A:   The PDF and the Current~All articles "feed view" include the same citations, displayed in a different style. Citations may appear in multiple categories, as appropriate.  Both formats have links to online full text when available.

The printer-friendly PDF is useful if you want to mark articles of interest, for reading later or as a means of submitting a hardcopy request for document delivery.

The "feed view" allows you to quickly jump to topics of interest.  Is saves paper, since you can copy & paste citations into an e-mail request for document delivery.  In addition, if you prefer to use an RSS reader for notification of new issues, then "feed view" is for you.
