LIFE CHIROPRACTIC COLLEGE WEST TEAMS WITH THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL AND THE AMERICAN RED CROSS TO HOST AN EMERGENCY BLOOD DRIVE
August 22, 2005 (Hayward, CA)—With less than a day’s supply of O Negative blood on hand and the Labor Day holiday weekend approaching, the American Red Cross faced an urgent need for blood donors.
California State Assemblymember Johan Klehs called on Dr. Gerard Clum who offered Life West as the site for a blood drive. “We were all out of location options and I almost gave up until Dr. Clum said yes,” said District Director Anne Taylor.
Though they had only a week to prepare, LCCW staff, Red Cross workers, the CHP, and student volunteers scrambled to make the drive happen on campus Friday, August 19. The Red Cross set a goal of 30 whole blood units, expected 20 and received 39 plus 10 pints of double red cells. “The drive came in at 130% of goal for whole blood and 100% of goal for double red cells,” said Sara O’Brien of the American Red Cross Blood Services.
The drive was so successful and the need so dire that Life West will host a future Blood drive, in early 2006. |
