Chiropractic care of a patient with vertebral and sacroiliac subluxations, low back pain, hip pain and diabetes.

Alcantara J, Plaugher G, Myshka JE. (In Review)

Abstract:

Objective:         To describe the chiropractic care of a patient with low back pain, hip pain and Type II diabetes.  Management approaches from both chiropractic and medical perspectives are discussed.

Clinical Features:         A 23-year old mother of 2 received chiropractic care     for complaints of low back pain and bilateral hip pain.  In addition, the patient was medically diagnosed with diabetes and has been on Glyburide medication for the duration (i.e., 2-1/2 years) of her condition.

Intervention and Outcome:     High velocity, low amplitude adjustments (i.e. Gonstead) were applied to sites of vertebral and sacroiliac subluxations.  Within 2 weeks and 8 visits, the patient’s diabetic condition of 2 years duration improved significantly to the point of being medication-free.  In addition, her poor vision (attributed to her diabetes) also improved.

Conclusion:       The chiropractic care of a patient suffering from low back pain, bilateral hip pain and diabetes has been presented.  The possible role of chiropractic care (vis-à-vis adjustments to sites of subluxations) in the care of patients with complaints beyond musculoskeletal conditions were examined.
